Roman Shades: Structured vs Unconstructed

Roman shades are on of the most often requested window treatments for my clients. Many times, we layer a sheer roman over a black out roller blind to offer the most flexibility. The sheer panel on front offers sunlight diffusion and softens gritty views, while the black out roller blind assists with light control. The major question that I have to discuss with clients is: "Do you prefer structured or unconstructed shades?"

The structured shade has "boning" sewn into the folds of the window treatment that offer structure. This boning is only offered in certain lengths, and often times will limit the overall size you do a window treatment in. This look is best used for an architectural environment where clean lines and tailored appearance counts.

The unconstructed shade has no visible hardware. It's a soft treament with elegant detailing. This treatement is best in casual environments, offering a slightly feminine touch.
