Mr Call's Notes

I visited the Room & Board showroom to spend real time with the Jasper 86" Sofa. It was staged in a calm fabric on the main floor, sized for two adults to sit side by side without crowding. I sat down and got to work.

The Jasper is Room & Board's well-known American-made daily sofa. Eighty-six inches wide, thirty-six inches deep, with a benchmade hardwood frame and a high-resiliency CertiPUR-US foam core wrapped in fiber, feather, and down. There is a lot to like here, and a few things worth knowing before you order.

The sit is the strongest part of this sofa. Seat height lands at nineteen inches and seat depth at twenty-one inches, which keeps the piece conversational rather than collapsed. The cushion is soft on top and structured underneath — sink-in comfort without becoming a lounge pit. The frame is benchmade hardwood, the foam is documented, and the sofa is made in the United States. At nineteen hundred and ninety-nine dollars in the right fabric, the value is real.

The back view is where I have notes. The construction is paneled, with a back that sits high enough to be the first thing you read from behind. This is not a sofa I would float in the middle of a room. There is also a suspension question worth resolving before you order — Room & Board lists dual flexolator suspension for the Jasper, but also notes that Brava, Declan, and Sumner covers come with webbing seat suspension. Ask the salesperson which one applies to the exact fabric you are ordering.

Ninety on The Call Standard. Mr Call Approved. Place it against a wall, choose Brava in fog, camel, or umber for the best balance of look and performance, and confirm the suspension type at order. Skip the Declan upcharge unless the salesperson can name a specification that justifies it.

What this sofa is

The Jasper 86" is Room & Board's flagship daily-use American-made sofa. Eighty-six inches wide, thirty-six inches deep, with a benchmade hardwood frame, a CertiPUR-US foam core wrapped in fiber, feather, and down, and a wide fabric program that ranges from in-stock to fully custom.

It is built for living rooms, family rooms, and apartments where the buyer wants a sofa that is comfortable, upright, well-priced, and responsibly made. Room & Board has been refining this piece for years, and the engineering shows.

The sit

The seat height is nineteen inches. That is the right number for most adults — knees land comfortably, feet stay on the floor, and getting up and down is easy.

The seat depth is twenty-one inches, which keeps the sit conversational. Upright enough for reading, eating dinner, and a long phone call, without the slide-down recline of a deeper lounge sofa.

The cushion is the part worth highlighting. A high-resiliency CertiPUR-US foam core wrapped in fiber, feather, and down gives a soft-on-top, structured-underneath feel. Sink-in comfort without becoming a lounge pit. The combination is hard to engineer at this price, and Room & Board does it well.

The look of the sofa

From the front and the side, the Jasper reads calm, restrained, and well-proportioned. The wood legs are clean, the arm is appropriately scaled, and the front face of the sofa is the strongest view.

The construction is paneled — back panel separate from the arms — and the back sits high enough to be the first thing you read from behind. The rear view is not the strongest view of this sofa. Against a wall, that does not matter. Floating in the middle of a room, it does.

The honest recommendation: place the Jasper against a wall. The wall solves the rear view, and what is left is the clean front, the calm silhouette, and the comfortable sit.

What works
  • Sit Soft, sink-in comfort with upright proportions. Comfortable without becoming a lounge pit.
  • Dimensions Eighty-six inches wide, thirty-six inches deep, nineteen-inch seat height, twenty-one-inch seat depth. Conversational scale.
  • Cushion High-resiliency CertiPUR-US foam core wrapped in fiber, feather, and down. The standout feature.
  • Made in the United States Built in the U.S. of U.S. and imported materials. Benchmade hardwood frame.
  • Certifications and disclosures CertiPUR-US foam, low-emission claims, sustainable material signals, and recycled polyester content in Brava.
  • Value Nineteen hundred and ninety-nine dollars in the right fabric. Strong for what you take home.
What to be aware of
  • Paneled construction The back panel is separate from the arms. The rear view shows the seams.
  • Raised back The back sits high enough to be visible from behind. Best placed against a wall.
  • Suspension ambiguity Room & Board lists dual flexolator suspension, but also notes that Brava, Declan, and Sumner covers come with webbing seat suspension. Ask which one applies to your fabric.
  • Fabric choice matters In-stock ivory options are a daily-use risk. Brava in fog, camel, or umber is the safer order.
  • Declan upcharge Declan adds roughly four hundred dollars without published performance proof to justify it.
Who this sofa is for

Right for: living rooms, family rooms, and apartments with a wall behind the sofa. Households that want a comfortable, upright sit and care about American-made and responsibly sourced construction. Buyers at this price who value the sit and the documentation over the rear silhouette.

Less ideal for: open-plan layouts where the sofa floats in the middle of the room. Buyers who lead with ivory upholstery in a daily-use household. Anyone planning to pay the Declan upcharge without confirming what specification it buys.

Fabric performance — in-stock options

Room & Board offers the Jasper in a handful of in-stock fabrics for fast delivery. The four most common picks are scored below. The takeaway is straightforward — Brava is the strongest performance fabric in the program, and the ivory is the catch.

In-stock fabric Score Read
Brava ivory 88 / 100 Best disclosed performance case in the in-stock program. Performance, family-friendly, pet-friendly, fade-resistant, responsibly made, synthetic-heavy composition. The problem is ivory in a daily-use room.
Tepic haze 78 / 100 More practical color direction than ivory. The published performance information does not match what Brava puts on the page.
Sumner ivory 74 / 100 Good visual fit. Weaker disclosed performance case. A look choice, not the strongest performance choice.
Declan putty 70 / 100 Costs more without enough visible performance proof on the page. Do not pay the upcharge without a better reason.
Fabric performance — custom direction

If you are willing to wait for a custom order, the smarter direction is to stay in the Brava family and move away from ivory. The four custom options below all keep Brava's published performance story and improve the daily-use case.

Custom direction Score Why
Brava fog 92 / 100 The best likely upgrade. Keeps Brava's performance story and lowers the daily-use risk of ivory.
Brava camel 91 / 100 Strong daily-use direction. Warmer and more forgiving than ivory.
Brava umber 91 / 100 The best darker practical choice in the Brava family.
Brava indigo 89 / 100 Strong performance family. Dark blue can show lint, dust, and fading more clearly over time.
